Baltistan is renowned for its natural beauty. This is a culturally diversified
country where a wide variety of traditions are observed. This is one of the
civilizations that celebrates Nowruz on March 21st every year. A religious and
cultural event is held in Chitral, Gilgit, and Baltistan to mark the beginning
of spring.
This
celebration is held in Baltistan from March 21st to March 23rd. On Nowruz,
people exchange colorful eggs with one another and watch polo tournaments. In
the past, children and ladies would wear fresh outfits to meet each other's
eyes. Congregations are conducted in various places where special prayers are
made for the country's well-being. The Nawroz holiday kicks out with
agricultural activities in Hunza area, when residents start plowing their
fields. It's a manner of welcoming the spring season for the people.
There
are some novel ways of celebrating this day in Ghizer. Those who are
one-year-old or younger are laid on dry fruits to receive blessings of life,
and their hair is trimmed for the first time, on this occasion. On this day,
friends and family get together. On this day, "dow" and
"dirum" are the two native dishes being prepared and served to
guests.
